Four

The works in Four were made during an artist residency at Casa Lü in Mexico City. In an effort to engage a making process of giving, rather than taking, while a guest in another county, I focused on processes that recorded my observations or responded with material I carried with me. This included several banners with pouches, to travel with what’s necessary to make art.

I made cyanotypes and rubbings of trees and urban sidewalks as a way of learning the material, light, and surfaces of Mexico City. Back in the studio, I wove these materials together to play with two- and three-dimensional perception. I expose both sides of my materials, and in the banners, avoid defining a front or back, intending for the volley of presences and absence to be continual.
